I don’t think how and why will people not buy a Notebook (Laptop) vis-Ã -vis a Tablet, considering the Tablets are mostly a read only devices. I would buy a good Tablet (which is iPad right now) to consume content in very interesting ways but for some reason I don’t have much reasons to replace my Laptop with a Tablet device. Or is it that there are people buying Laptops today which they use only for consuming/reading purposes only and these (and the likes) people will defect and buy Tablets over the next few months. Does anyone have any research which they can point to on how many people fall in this bracket. I may be wrong but somehow I don’t get it.
Forecast: 19 Million Notebooks Lost to Tablet Cannibalization (Meaning iPad) in 2011
During its last earnings call, Apple noted that over 65 percent of the Fortune 100 have deployed or are piloting the iPad. With that in mind, some analysts have begun to reassess the cannibalization rate of tablets on the notebook industry, and the numbers that Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope has come up with are pretty interesting.
He figures tablet unit shipments will jump to 54.7 million in 2011, with 35 percent PC unit cannibalization, and to 79.2 million in 2012, with 33 percent cannibalization. Overall, he expects 19.1 million notebook units to be lost to tablets in 2011, and 26.1 million to be lost in 2012.
