Late Night Wars
I've long enjoyed watching NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Letterman's Late Show(CBS) but I just can't find any reason behind talks of taking out Nightline and replacing it with Letterman's show. Nightline IS one of the most RELEVANT shows on TV.

He was still screaming when the guards threw him to the floor. Getting up on his hands and knees, he discovered that he was in another cubicle. Much like his own, it contained a chair and a desk with a PC on it. Mechanically, Winston climbed into the chair, and glanced at the PC’s screen, where a splash screen showed that an application was slowly loading. Then he let out a wordless cry of despair that, despite heavy soundproofing, was heard in all the cubicles throughout the Ministry of Truth.

The splash screen said: "Welcome to the StarOffice productivity suite."

Came across a very nifty site. Make A Shorter Link is a cool and quite useful service being provided by the folks at Useful Inc. You just enter your long URL, generally from news, shopping and maps sites and it outputs a very short one which can be easily included in emails(You don't have to worry about link wraps, email programs lopping off links etc).

Dave Winer thinks Google should buy them.

"If the annual report or quarterly report has to be the size of the New York City phone book, that's life," said General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt.

In the post Enron collapse world, GE will be changing its Financial Disclosure methods to provide more details about its operations. We can expect other big corporations to follow suit. Good for the investors.

Yesterday, I started reading Jack: Straight from the Gut by Jack Welch with John A. Byrne. Went through the first few pages and it looks like a good autobiography to me. Jack Welch, World's most admired CEO is the most widely emulated manager. After working in GE Appliances, Louisville for a year, there was no way, I could have remained untouched by Jack and his business practices especially, Six Sigma and Boundayless behaviour.

We're back

We are back from our vacation. The vacation was good although we feel we did not get enough time to relax and spend with our folks. It was very hectic and we were constantly running here and there the whole time. The weather kept changing all the time causing us some trouble. The Carbon Monoxide levels are on the rise. But that's the way it is, has been in India. Pune(The city where we belong to) has changed. There were "n" number of coffee shops throughout the city. Some shopping malls have also sprung up. Watch out Bombay.

While we are recuperating from the Jet Lag, there are tonnes of emails at work that need to be worked upon. It will take some time to catch up on what went through the last three weeks at work. Off work, there is the LOTY Project we need to get involved in back again. We will also be concentrating on ASP.Net now that we bought a book while in India.

Haskell and the Language of the Year Project

Ever heard of Haskell. Well, From what I have gathered, it's a Programming Language which is purely Functional unlike C, Java etc(These are imperative languages). A study group has been started called Loty 2002 Study Group, where the focus will be learning Functional Programming through a study of Haskell Language. For more details, Visit Loty page on Pragmatic Programmer website.

I think, it's a great idea of learning a new language every year. It's very important to be multilinguistic when it comes to programming languages. Knowing more than one language brings with it an understanding not only of each language’s strengths and weaknesses, but also how they can work together to solve technical problems.

I have joined this group and from whatever introductions of the members I have seen so far, it seems it will be very productive and interesting. I will be writing more on my and group's progress on Haskell in the coming month's.

It's snowing heavily outside. This is our first winter in Cleveland. Hopefully we will have some respite from cold in a week or two, when we go for a three weeks vacation. Today, I was looking for online presence of few people I thought I could find online. And guess what, I found Mike Frohme's web site. He is one really cool fellow. I used to work with him while in Louisville. I hope he remembers me.
